Air Pollution in New Zealand

چکیده

The control of air pollution is more of an art than a science, still lacking an adequate power of numeration to qualify as a truly scientific discipI-ine, despite a long history of concern about it. There was, for example, legislation against air pollution in London in the 13th century, and, until the time of Pasteur, sundry qualities of "night airs" and "fetid vapours" were held re~ sponsible for most human ailments. When the public health revolution occurred in the 19th century the establislunent of a veIY real relationship between 'vater pollution and personal hygiene and disease seems to have diverted attention from air pollution. It became the Cinderella of the environ. mental scienlCes and was largely neglected until the second half of this century.

Is particulate air pollution associated with health and health inequalities in New Zealand?

Air pollution can increase mortality risk and may also exacerbate socioeconomic inequalities in health outcomes. This New Zealand study investigated whether exposure to particulate air pollution (PM(10)) was associated with mortality and health inequalities. Annual mean PM(10) estimates for urban Census Area Units (CAUs) were linked to cause-specific mortality data. A dose-response relationship...

Air pollution and its health impacts: the changing panorama.

Urban air pollution levels are associated with increased mortality and cardiorespiratory morbidity. These health effects occur even at exposure levels below those stipulated in current air-quality guidelines, and it is unclear whether a safe threshold exists. Air pollution in Australia and New Zealand comes primarily from motor vehicle emissions, electricity generation from fossil fuels, heavy ...

Health damage from current air pollution levels.

In 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended concentrationresponse functions (CRF) for three major pollutants: fine particles (PM2.5), ozone (O3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in its Health Risks of Air Pollution in Europe (HRAPIE) report.3 Effects were classified into two groups: group A (pollutant-outcome pairs for which enough data are available to enable reliable quantification of ...

Health Effects of Vehicle Emissions

All over the world concern is growing over the health effects of emissions from internal combustion engines in the transport fleet. Studies conducted using air pollution exposure information and various health indicators, such as hospital admissions, are invariably showing up real and dramatic effects. Some work carried out in Australia and New Zealand has confirmed that a similar level of heal...

Air pollution and mortality in New Zealand: cohort study

BACKGROUND Few cohort studies of the health effects of urban air pollution have been published. There is evidence, most consistently in studies with individual measurement of social factors, that more deprived populations are particularly sensitive to air pollution effects. METHODS Records from the 1996 New Zealand census were anonymously and probabilistically linked to mortality data, creati...
